Applied Leader Simulation

STARS enrollment details (course not offered in summer 2015)

The Applied Leader Simulation challenges Manager Academy graduates to apply their knowledge in a one-day learning experience. During a three-round tenure as a manager, participants use a highly customized board simulation that guides and directs activity. The simulation is designed to reflect the opportunities and obstacles that one might encounter when managing a team of representatives who must meet goals as they interact with internal and external customers in their day-to-day work. Participants work with peers as a team, competing against other teams to develop the most-successful simulation outcome. This robust, engaging course stretches managers to confront complex, highly interwoven performance management and operation issues commonly faced in a university setting. Rather than focusing on a single skill, this course challenges participants to synthesize their skills to make difficult decisions, each with its own set of benefits and consequences. Themes covered in the course include Employee Engagement, Performance Management, Leadership Styles, Collaboration and Teamwork, Risk Mitigation, and Managing Diverse Staff (values, culture, generations, etc.).

STARS enrollment details (course not offered in summer 2015)

This course is an interactive, practice based workshop that provides managers with skills for collaborating with others when assigning and delegating work. Developed by renowned thought leaders Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard, Situational Leadership is based on the premise that effective managers need to be flexible, with no single optimal style for all leaders to use all the time. Instead, effective managers adjust their leadership style based on the person or group, as well as the task, job or function that needs to be accomplished. Three crucial delegation skills are taught via the Situational Leadership model:

  • Diagnosis… learn to choose the most appropriate leadership style in a given situation
  • Flexibility… gain insight into four leadership styles and how to put them into practice when delegating
  • Partnering… learn communication strategies for working with individuals to develop their competence and commitment
