Overview
Unrestricted views are one of the benefits of living in Blackwelder and Quillen, Escondido Village’s two 12-story towers. Each building has 110 two-bedroom efficiency apartments, each shared by two single students. Common spaces in each building include lounges for social activities, barbecue and picnic areas, computer clusters, and piano practice room.
EV’s high-rise apartments were built over a period of time, beginning in 1971, and remodeled in 2009-11. Constructed of reinforced, textured concrete, the buildings contrast with the otherwise horizontal layout of Escondido Village prompting comparisons in press reports with skyscrapers in a park, similar to those in Latin America for which architect LeCorbusier is known.
Quillen honors Issac Quillen, dean of Stanford’s School of Education (SUSE) from 1952 through 1966. Under his leadership, SUSE began its transition from a regional training program to a world-class research institution.
Blackwelder was named for Eliot Blackwelder, whose long and distinguished career included his role as head of Stanford’s geology department from 1922 to 1945. Considered a “gentleman of the old school,” Blackwelder was known for his dignity, generosity, and courteous nature.
