According to a study by IRiSS visiting scholar Andrew Penner and IRiSS faculty fellow Aliya Saperstein, youths who appear black were significantly more likely to be arrested than non-black individuals (and those who just appeared non-black). This means that racial perception is more relevant than surroundings, culture, and behavior when it comes to police interactions. Read more.

May 14, 2015. Marie Toney, finance and administrative services manager for the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences, was awarded the Arnice P. Streit Award for Distinguished Service in the School of Humanities and Sciences at the school's annual staff recognition lunch today.
The Institute for Research in the Social Sciences (IRiSS) invites applications for its 2015-2016 Dissertation Fellows. The program supports work across the six social science departments within the School of Humanities & Sciences. Particular encouragement is provided to graduate students whose research crosses disciplinary boundaries, relies upon computational social science methods, and/or analyzes large, complex data sets. However, any social science graduate student at the dissertation writing stage is welcome to apply.
