The City. 2014 Behavioral and Social Science Summit

November 8, 2014. Paul Brest Hall, Stanford University

The city is where it all happens.

Immigrants flow in from rural areas and from other countries. Children are born and educated, get jobs, develop relationships, deal with health problems, and grow old. The built environment and the urban transportation system improve individual lives and the life of the planet or make them worse. Entrepreneurs flourish or flounder, affecting the level and quality of employment. City agencies alleviate or aggravate social problems and crime.

Inequality is most apparent in cities. Proximity highlights the contrast between rich and poor, or the utter lack of contrast if a city begins to serve only the rich or only the poor.

Presented by the Center for the Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford (CASBS) in conjunction with the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), “The City” brings together some of the world’s top social and behavioral scientists in discussion with leaders in industry, media, and the community. Their conversations and debates will raise key questions about the best means and policies for improving the urban experience.
