Encryption at Stanford

Encryption at Stanford

The University has established a goal of verifiably encrypting all faculty, staff, and postdoc Windows and Macintosh computers, and iOS and Android mobile devices by May 31, 2015.

Encrypting your laptop and desktop computers is the single most important step you can take to protect your personal information and Stanford's data in the event the device is lost or stolen. The University has established a goal of verifiably encrypting all faculty, staff, and postdoc Windows and Macintosh laptop and desktop computers by May 31, 2015.

This requirement applies to both Stanford and personally owned computers that will continue to be used for Stanford activities on the campus network, other than those granted exceptions due to special requirements. Note that all laptops, desktops, and mobile devices used to access, transmit, or store Prohibited or Restricted Data as defined under the Data Classification Guidelines should be encrypted by now and should not wait until the May 31, 2015 deadline to do so.

What do I need to do?

  • For desktop or laptop computer users, decide if you want to encrypt the devices yourself or contact your local computer support.

  • For mobile devices handling Prohibited or Restricted Data, visit mdm.stanford.edu on your mobile device to begin the enrollment and encryption process.

  • Visit mydevices.stanford.edu to find out if the device now complies with this Stanford requirement.

For non-compliant devices, click the link associated with the device to see the device details. The detail page shows the specific reason for non-compliance and instructions on how to fix it.

Follow the steps above for any other devices that are listed as "Not Compliant."

Note: You may see servers and virtual machines (VMs) in your My Devices listing. These devices are not subject to the encryption requirement at this time.
