The Center for African Studies, in collaboration with other departments, offers a number of research and language fellowships to Stanford students of different levels and disciplines.  

 

To find out which opportunity is best for you, read each description and click on the link for more specific information.  Each fellowship  has different qualifications, amounts offered and deadlines.  

 

MA Fellowship

Are you applying for the MA program in African Studies? The MA fellowship awards $15,000 to two incoming MA students.

 

African Service Fellowship

Would you like to learn more about social, economic and political issues in Africa and how to help alleviate them?  Do you have a specific organization in Africa you would like to volunteer with?  The African Service Fellowship offers up to $4000 to support travel and living expenses during the summer for students working with a specific organization in Africa. 

 

International Public Service Fellowship

Are you a graduating senior or co-term who wishes to spend an entire year working with an overseas organization?  The International Public Service Fellowship offers up to $35,000 to support travel and living expenses for 12 months of full-time work in a host national or international non-governmental organization (NGO), intergovernmental or national governmental agency located in a country not included on the State Department’s Travel Advisory list.  

 

Graduate Student Research Fellowship

Are you a doctoral student or a graduate student in Stanford's Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, Law, Earth Sciences and Medicine?  Are you planning on doing summer research in Africa?  The Graduate Student Research Fellowship awards up to $5,000 for expenses related to summer research in Africa.

 

Center for African Studies African Language Fellowship 

Are you a doctoral student, graduate student in Stanford's Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, Law, Earth Sciences and Medicine or an undergraduate pursuing honors? Does your academic development and/or research require knowledge of an African language?  The Center for African Studies African Language fellowship offers up to $5000 for an intensive summer language study course, in African or the at an accredited institute in the U.S.

 

Cape Town Summer Fellowship Program

Are you an undergraduate who will also be studying in the BOSP Cape Town program (Winter and/or Spring Quarters)?  Are you hoping to continue your research or service-learning in Cape Town over the summer months?  The Cape Town Fellowship program awards up to $4500 for students to continue research or service and make substantial contributions to their partner organizations and communities with which they work.  

 

Susan Ford Dorsey Fellowship for Field Research in Africa

Are you an H&S doctoral student engaged in research on sub-Saharan Africa? The Susan Ford Dorsey Fellowship provides financial support for Ph.D. candidates to undertake field research in Africa in support of their dissertation projects.
