March 4: Politics and Cash in Kenya

Kelly Zhang, PhD Candidate, Political Science, CAS Summer Research Award Recipient 2014

Corruption and cash handouts occur with regularity in Kenyan politics. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with local leaders and experimental survey data from villages, this project examines (1) how cash handouts featured in past politician campaigns and (2) how cash handouts feature in citizen perceptions of politician performance and corruption today.

Analysis of Trauma Mortality and Surgical Delays at a Rural Hospital in Cameroon

Chao Long, MD Candidate, School of Medicine, CAS Summer Research Award Recipient 2014

Trauma-related injuries kill almost 6 million people per year, accounting for more than malaria, TB, and HIV/AIDS—3 of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases—combined. More than 90% of the world’s injury-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, yet epidemiological data is scarce. This talk discusses the development of a hospital-based trauma registry in rural Cameroon. This registry, by monitoring the key steps involved in the process of trauma care and the outcomes of that care, can be used for quality assurance, public health reasons, and informing injury prevention.
