U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents

Fellows, regardless of citizenship, are eligible for financial aid. Due to the rigorous nature of our curriculum, you should not rely on part-time work to defray the cost of the program.

Loans

U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to borrow funds from the Department of Education’s Federal Direct Loan Programs. The government restricts these loans to students who are not in default on any previous loans and who do not owe a refund to any federal program. The federal loan program terms are subject to change.

The Financial Aid Office will determine which loans to offer you, based on your citizenship status and other information on your financial aid application. Domestic borrowers (i.e., U.S. citizens and permanent residents) have the option to choose between:

In order to facilitate this process, your financial aid award letters will reference these funds as “GSB PLUS Loan” or “Private Loan.” Later on, you’ll be able to customize your own loan package by choosing to borrow from either of the two loan programs.

Prior to selecting your lender, we recommend that you compare interest rates, terms and conditions, and repayment options for all loan programs.

You can borrow up to the cost of tuition minus any financial aid or other resources (i.e., parents, relatives, friends, employers, and other outside sources). Loans at Stanford GSB must be used for educational purposes.

External Scholarships

We encourage you to research sources outside Stanford GSB to help reduce your debt loan.

Yellow Ribbon Program

Stanford GSB participates in the Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2008, the Yellow Ribbon Program — a grant that is available to eligible military candidates.

Eligibility criteria requires that you:

  • Served an aggregate period of active duty of at least 36 months after September 10, 2001.
  • Were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and you served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001.
  • Are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.

The Office for Military-Affiliated Communities serves as the liaison between the university; its students; and the various federal, state, and local agencies concerned with veterans’ benefits. Review their website for additional information about education benefits for veterans at Stanford.
