With Stanford since 2012, Sarah is the Manager of Operations for the BeWell Advising program. In addition to providing quality health counseling to the faculty and staff at Stanford, Sarah is a Mindfulness Instructor with the Health Improvement Program, developing and teaching classes and workshops in the area of stress management. She describes her vocation as “helping people hear themselves.” She asserts, “When we see ourselves more clearly, and with compassion, we can realize our deepest intentions for healthy living.”

For over a decade Sarah has worked as an educator, counselor, and coach in the field of health and wellness. She earned her undergraduate degree from Azusa Pacific University, competing for the track and field team while studying education and ministry. From LA she moved to Seattle where she taught and coached high school students before coming to the Bay Area for her graduate work in 2006. Sarah earned her M.A. in Counseling and Health Psychology from Santa Clara University while teaching and counseling at Bethany University near Santa Cruz. At SCU she studied under Dr. Shauna Shapiro and received the 2008 Research Excellence Grant for her work teaching mindfulness. Sarah also focused her graduate work in the areas of neuroscience and health education, ultimately leading to her training as an instructor of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction which she currently teaches at Stanford.

Sarah takes a holistic approach in her work, weaving in principles of mind-body science and neuroplasticity, asserting that we can literally change our wiring by practicing new patterns of being in the world. “The cultivation of compassionate attention to the present moment is fundamentally healing,” she says.

Sarah cultivates her own mindfulness practice through plenty of yoga, running, and racing the coastal trails in Santa Cruz where she lives with her son (and greatest teacher), Luke. She is consistently among the top-finishers in distances from 5k to half-marathon and savors these miles as an opportunity to breathe fresh air and practice staying present in the real work of life.
