Degree Requirements

In order to complete the PhD degree requirements, a minimum of 135 units must be completed with at least 90 units taken at Stanford.

For additional information about minimum residency requirements for PhD students, please see the Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures Handbook, Section 3.2.

The following program requirements must also be met to receive the PhD degree:

• Complete all course requirements with a grade of B or better
• Pass the oral qualifying exam
• Pass the final oral exam
• Submit a written dissertation
• Publish a minimum of one major first-authored paper (submitted, in review, or published at time of dissertation submission)
