Infectious Diseases In the Department of Pediatrics

Goals and Objectives

  1. To understand the preventive principles of pediatric infectious diseases with respect to disease control, prevention of nosocomial infections, and immunization programs.

    • Participation in ongoing discussions with Infection Control Nurse Epidemiologist regarding inpatient and outpatient issues.
    • Participation in teaching and research conferences regarding appropriate use of pediatric vaccines and the understanding of immunologic mechanisms underlying effective pediatric vaccines.
    • Participation in weekly pediatric clinical conferences, combined adult/pediatric infectious diseases weekly teaching conferences and Grand Rounds.
    • Review the pertinent literature beginning with Pediatric Infectious Diseases textbooks and followup with specific current clinical journal articles regarding specific disease states.
  2. To understand the pathophysiology, natural history, diagnosis and clinical management of the common or important clinical infectious disease syndromes listed below.

    • Participation in outpatient and inpatient care with attending physicians.
    • Participation in didactic and comprehensive teaching sessions regarding the following conditions.
    • Outpatient:

      • Sinusitis/pharyngitis
      • Acute and chronic lymphadenopathy
      • Failure to thrive
      • Pneumonia
      • Urinary tract infection
      • Cellulitis
      • Infectious diarrhea
      • Sexually transmitted diseases therapy
      • Primary care of the HIV infected patient
      • Approach to patient with recurrent or persistent fever/rash
      • Common parasitic infections
      • Advice to travelers
    • Inpatient:

      • Community-acquired pneumonia
      • Nosocomial pneumonia
      • Meningitis/encephalitis
      • Endocarditis
      • Fever of unknown origin
      • Sepsis syndromes
      • Septic arthritis/osteomyelitis
      • Antibiotic associated colitis
      • Toxic shock syndrome
      • Tuberculosis
      • Infections in the HlV infected patient
      • Infections in the immunocompromised host
  3. To understand the principles of antimicrobial therapy.
  4. To learn the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and costs of commonly used antibacterial, antiviral and agents with respect to the infectious disease syndromes listed above.
  5. To learn the basic mechanisms of microbial resistance.

    • Participation in outpatient and inpatient care with attending physicians.
    • Participation in didactic and comprehensive teaching sessions regarding the following conditions.
    • Participation in weekly pediatric clinical conferences, combined adult/pediatric infectious diseases weekly teaching conferences and Grand Rounds.
    • Review the pertinent literature beginning with Pediatric Infectious Diseases textbooks and followup with specific current clinical journal articles regarding specific disease states.
  6. To learn the functions and appropriate utilization of diagnostic microbiology, immunology, virology, mycology, and parasitology laboratories.

    • Participation in clinic and laboratory teaching sessions provided at the Stanford University Hospital Laboratory.
    • Inpatient and outpatient consultation and review of clinical specimens in the laboratories with the attending physician.
    • Participation in weekly pediatric clinical conferences, combined adult/pediatric infectious diseases weekly teaching conferences and Grand Rounds.
    • Review the pertinent literature beginning with Pediatric Infectious Diseases textbooks and followup with specific current clinical journal articles regarding specific disease states.
    • Participation in the one month laboratory elective at Stanford University Hospital laboratories.
  7. To acquire the appropriate teaching skills that can be used in the area of pediatric infectious diseases.

    • Participate in teaching of medical students and general pediatric residents rotating on the Pediatric Infectious Disease consult service and those on the General Pediatric Service.
    • Pediatric Infectious Disease residents prepare a clinical discussions for weekly pediatric clinical conference.
    • Preparation of monthly Pediatric Infectious Disease Grand Rounds Case and discussion.
