The selection and design of control groups is one of the most controversial topics in behavioral intervention research, particularly in behavioral medicine.  Whether, when, and how to control for attention is especially controversial.  Purpose-Guided Trial Design is a new heuristic framework that can help researchers and reviewers make better decisions about control groups and other trial design issues.
