The Department of Urology has a rich tradition of clinical excellence and pioneering research. The department encompasses urologic sections at Stanford University Hospital and Clinics, Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care Center. The Department offers medical students, residents, fellows and faculty unparalleled prospects for research and clinical training in an academic environment committed to excellence, innovation and diversity.
INSTRUCTION FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
Preclinical instruction: early clinical, directed reading, and research opportunities are available under the direction of individual faculty members.
Clinical instruction is designed to provide students with a broad background in clinical aspects of urology, including current developments in patient management and various areas of research in the specialty. The basic urology clerkship exposes a student to general and specialty based urology (oncology, female neurourology, pediatric urology, endourology, minimally invasive surgery, and male sexual dysfunction). Subinternships in Advanced Urology and Advanced Surgery/Urology are also offered. RESIDENCY TRAINING
The Residency Program in Urology, a four-year program after completion of two years of general surgery, is intended to bridge the gap between the medical and surgical management of uropathology by preparing physicians to thoroughly evaluate, understand, and manage all aspects of genitourinary disease. Selection includes acceptance for the internship and first year residency training in General Surgery at Stanford. Following satisfactory completion of this core training in General Surgery, resident trainees enter into the formal Urology training program. The first, third, and fourth years are clinical years spent at Stanford University Medical Center and its affiliated hospitals, Lucille Salter Packard Children's Hospital and the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. The second year is spent doing research in the laboratories of the Department of Urology, where residents work on projects of their own or join one or more of the faculty's research programs. This year is designed for the residents to learn the basic investigative techniques being utilized to advance our understanding of diseases of the genitourinary tract, and acquire an in-depth experience in the modern scientific approach to problem solving.
