The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery does not offer degrees; however, the department accepts graduate students as advisees for study and research. Undergraduate students may arrange individual research projects under the supervision of department faculty.
INSTRUCTION FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
Preclinical instruction includes the capabilities and expectations of modern cardiac surgery. The faculty are actively involved in research programs at Stanford University Medical Center and the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Medical Center, where directed reading and research tutorials are offered. The principal research emphases are in the fields of cardiac and cardiopulmonary replacement, organ preservation, biomaterials compatibility, cardiac physiology and pharmacology (ventricular mechanics and bioenergetics), and transplantation immunology.
Clinical instruction provides experimental and clinical experiences for medical students and contributes to the training of academic cardiothoracic surgeons. It explores horizons in cardiac research in the broadest contexts and thus has established several collaborative programs leading to doctoral work in nonmedical schools. The principal thrust is in the field of cardiac and cardiopulmonary replacement, and both clinical and experimental programs are in progress. RESIDENCY TRAINING
The Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgical Training Program at Stanford is an innovative, integrated six-year curriculum divided into two parts with an optional two years of academic enrichment after completion of the initial curriculum:
Part I: The first two years comprise Prerequisite Clinical Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Part II: The final four continuous years comprise Requisite Clinical Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Optional 2-Year Academic Enrichment: Following the initial curriculum, there is the potential for two years of Academic Enrichment through either laboratory or clinical research opportunities or pursuit of a graduate degree in a related or ancillary field (e.g., MPH, MBA, MS, or PhD). This program is accredited by the ACGME.
