Welcome to the Department of Medicine

The vision of Stanford Medicine is reflected through our Department’s values and commitment to three interrelated missions: delivering the highest quality clinical care, developing research programs that lessen human suffering through the treatment and prevention of disease, and educating and training compassionate physicians in accordance with the highest academic and professional standards.

Throughout this transition in leadership our Department will continue to move forward. Building on a strong foundation of excellence we will recruit outstanding new faculty to assist us in accomplishing our missions. We will expand our knowledge base through the growth of research expenditures that increased from $82 million in 2009 to $100 million in 2010.

The Department of Medicine is comprised of 14 divisions which provide comprehensive health care services at three clinical centers:  Stanford Hospitals and Clinics, Veteran’s Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC). We have approxlimately 227 full time faculty, 114 medicine residents, and 150 fellows in medicine and other subspecialties. Each of these talented individuals shares the unique opportunity to integrate, conduct research, and train in a collaborative atmosphere with a world-class university.

Our dedicated staff provides assistance and support in carrying out our missions. Through our combined efforts, the Department of Medicine continues to be a model for excellence in patient care, research, and physician education.
