Stanford Dermatopathology Rotation
This service is a great opportunity to learn dermatopathology as the resident is responsible for all of the in-house and inside/outside skin biopsies, which provides a great range of basic cases as well as interesting outliers. The work day begins after lecture at approximately 9am, when you will sign out cases from the previous day. Between 11am-12pm you’ll show interesting/challenging cases at consensus conference with all dermatopathology attendings, fellows, and residents on service. Following consensus conference, you’ll order stains and levels on cases (if not already done during sign out), complete write ups for cases from sign out, and preview cases for the next day’s sign out (pre-dictation of diagnoses is optional). You’ll also spend time on the phone with clinicians sleuthing out their observations and impression, as clinical-pathologic correlation is particularly important in this field! As part of doing inside/outside cases, you are also responsible for contacting the outside institutions for additional material, i.e. slides or blocks, as needed. New cases will come out for preview everyday, except Sunday and Monday. New cases do come out on Saturday for Monday sign out however and it is up to you whether you come in on the weekend or come in early on Monday to preview these cases.
