Transfer to Another Stanford Department

If a postdoctoral scholar is moving to another department at Stanford University, either in a postdoctoral position, or in another classification, the following guidelines apply.

Transfer to another department as a Postdoctoral Scholar:  Coordination between the postdoctoral administrators in the two departments is necessary.   The current (old) department must terminate the postdoctoral appointment.  The appointing (new) department must initiate a new postdoctoral appointment following the guidelines here. (Do not use an @stanford.edu email address to invite a current Stanford postdoc in the PD Web Forms system. The postdoc must provide a non-Stanford email address for the invite).  The administrator of the new hiring department should check the appropriate box on the Recommendation Form online to indicate this is a transfer from another department.  It is advisable that the current department administrator contacts Postdoc Benefits, with a cc to the new department administrator and to the manager in OPA, about the termination being a transfer rather than a departure from Stanford in order to avoid cancellation and reinstatement of insurance benefits.

Transfer to Another Department in staff or academic staff position:  Coordination between the administrators in the two departments is necessary.   The current (old) department must terminate the postdoctoral appointment before the record can become available in PeopleSoft HR system.

In all cases, the Stanford ID number and SUNet remain the same.  It is recommended that no lapse in appointment occurs, particularly in the case of postdocs transferring training positions between departments, and that close attention to immigration status is paid in the case of visa holders.
