Workshops for Community-Based Teachers
From 1994-96, the American College of Physicians ran a national "Community-based Teaching Project". The Stanford Faculty Development Center (SFDC) was enlisted to conduct a series of 1.5 day regional teaching improvement workshops for community-based physicians. Over 300 community-based preceptors at various sites across the country have attended workshops led by faculty selected from the national network of over 60 faculty trained at that time by the SFDC as Clinical Teaching facilitators. The following regions held workshops: California, Connecticut, Ohio, New York, Virginia, and New Hampshire/Vermont.
Evaluation data from 282 participants (49% community- and 51% university-based faculty) indicated that the program structure was effective in enhancing teacher knowledge, attitudes, and skills related to teaching while also increasing desire to teach, collegiality and affiliation with the homesite institution.
This project demonstrates that co-sponsored community-based teaching-improvement programs, with support from professional organizations such as the ACP, can be an effective way to promote (a) the improvement of teaching and (b) the collaboration between community-based teachers and academic centers. The use of regionally-based trained physician-facilitators provides an effective method for training large groups of community faculty nationally.
