Eligibility and Qualifications
Trustees are representative of Stanford's diverse alumni body. While trustees' personal and professional backgrounds vary, all are passionate about Stanford, proven leaders with a history of professional achievement or civic involvement, and tireless volunteers dedicated to the university and its work.
Eligibility
To be eligible to serve on the Board of Trustees, candidates must be alumni of Stanford University (defined as having a degree and/or having completed a minimum of three or more quarters in a degree-granting program). Candidates who will be 70 years of age or older when the term commences, and those who are currently Stanford faculty, staff or students, are not eligible.

Qualifications
To be considered a qualified candidate for the Board of Trustees, the applicant will have demonstrated:
- Commitment to the university with a record of Stanford volunteer service
- Passion for Stanford
- Evidence of leadership
- Professional achievement and/or civic involvement
- Dedication to furthering the work of the university
- Commitment to Stanford through financial support and a willingness to participate in fundraising efforts
- Previous board and fiduciary experience
- Understanding of complex business, real estate and financial transactions
- Willingness to physically attend regular board and committee meetings (both on and off campus)
In order to complement and strengthen the composition of the current board, additional criteria such as diversity and area of expertise may be considered.
