Two recent strategic initiatives in our program, supported by the Stanford Construction Institute, are helping us to address the most urgent current needs of the industry:
- First, starting in 2008-09, we developed and began offering a new series of four courses focused on infrastructure project financing, development and delivery that has been a great success in terms of students enrolled, course evaluations and company interest in graduates with this background. At the same time, we continue to offer multiple courses that address the building and real estate development sectors of our industry, in conjunction with faculty from our new Architectural Design undergraduate minor.
- Second, starting in the 2008-09 academic year, the Stanford Construction Program began offering our latest MS degree option in Sustainable Design and Construction. This new MS degree track provides Construction students interested in this focus with additional coursework on energy-efficient conventional and renewable energy systems, "cradle-to-cradle" materials, daylighting, water reuse and other aspects of sustainable development of buildings and infrastructure. This broadens out our previous program in Design-Construction Integration, which emphasizes integration of structural design and construction for design-build contractors, to prepare students for careers in engineering and construction firms focused on lifecycle delivery of sustainable buildings and infrastructure.
