What we do

Architectural and technology strategy governance

The Strategy and Architecture group is responsible for producing and maintaining the enterprise technology strategy for IT Services. The group is also responsible for maintaining high-level technical architecture standards used across IT Services. The S&A group collaborates with IT management and technical owners of services to set direction and review design standards.

  • Leads development of IT Services' technology strategy including portfolio management and enterprise architecture
  • Leads development of standards in design and implementation of systems deployed by IT Services
  • Coordinates cross-functional Technical Lead discussions, including the Technology Architecture Strategy Council (TASC)
  • Convenes architectural reviews of all new technology projects where enterprise impact or strategic importance is significant

Collaborative outreach: peers, consortia, vendors

Through a rich set of professional relationships, the Strategy and Architecture team collaborate with counterparts at several peer higher-education/research institutions to share common practice and collective insight in the use of technology in support of Stanford University's mission. The team also leverages strategic relationships with specific vendors and shares relevant insight with Stanford community and peer institutions where possible. Consortia we actively participate include:

  • InCommon Federation
  • Common Solutions Group (CSG)
  • Middleware Architecture Committee for Education (MACE)
  • IT Architects in Academia (ITANA)
  • EDUCAUSE

Campus consulting on technology direction

The Strategy and Architecture group assists schools and central offices of Stanford University in technology selection and system design alternatives. The team also represents and advocates for campus groups to influence vendor product design and technology direction, e.g., open integration and data standards. The group works to:

  • Evaluate technology solutions
  • Partner with key clients in proofs-of-concept testing of innovative technology
  • Evangelize IT Services technology strategy, implementation standards and central service offerings
  • Integrate support of vendor products and services
  • Research and develop targeted areas of innovation that support strategic goals
  • Research on technology trends in IT areas of strategic interest to Stanford, higher education, basic research
  • Maintain testing environments for new technology
