In Product Realization Lab classes, students use the rich array of tools, design engineering software, and readings to develop soft goods, electronics, metal and mechatronics devices, Interactions with the Stanford design engineering community as well as field trips to iconic Bay area design engineering firms round out students' experience.

Core Curriculum

ME 103N Product Realization: Making Is Thinking

Students in this project-based seminar develop product realization confidence and intuition using the rich array of tools available in the Product Realization Lab, industry-standard design engineering software, and course readings. Students develop products including soft goods, composite utensils, wearable electronics, mechatronics devices, and a final project of their own choosing.

ME 103D Engineering Drawing and Design

The fundamentals of engineering drawing including orthographic projection, dimensioning, sectioning, exploded and auxiliary views, assembly drawings, and SolidWorks.

ME 203 Design and Manufacturing

Students experience the adventure of integrating product definition, conceptual design, detail design, prototype manufacture, public presentation of outcomes, and portfolio creation, and learn manufacturing processes of scale to become more powerful designers. Learning outcomes emphasize functionality, process exploration, and quality of implementation.

ME 205 Flexible Part Design

Students design and fabricate tooling to create and refine elastomeric parts using RTV silicone rubber. Focus is on the development of elastomeric part design intuition through iteration. Fabrication techniques include manual/CNC machining and additive manufacturing, and molding liquid silicone.

ME 219 Magic of Materials and Manufacturing

Students who wish to create new products and services acquire a professional foundation in materials and materiality from the points of view of product design, manufacturing processes, and business systems through field trips and multimedia presentations.

ME 314 Good Products Bad Products

Students critique features of industrial products that cause them to be successes or failures, from the straightforward (performance, economy, reliability) to the nuanced (human and cultural fit, compatibility with the environment, craftsmanship, positive emotional response of the user), the esoteric (elegance, sophistication, symbolism). Course output icludes projects, papers, guest speakers, and field trips.

ME 318 Computer-Aided Product Creation

Students practice prototype design and fabrication emphasizing the use of computer-supported tools in the design process. Students choose, design, and build individual projects using CNC software and CNC milling machines.

ME 324 Precision Engineering

Students learn concepts and technology that enable precision so the ratio of overall dimensions to uncertainty of measurements is large relative to standard engineering practice. Application areas include instrumentation for applied physics, diamond-turning equipment, integrated circuit manufacturing equipment, and manufacturing metrology systems. Application experience includes team-based design and manufacture emphasizing principles of precision engineering.
