LELAND, MISSISSIPPI - APRIL 29: Medical workers with Delta Health Center prepare to vaccinate people at a pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic in a rural Delta community on April 29, 2021 in Leland, Mississippi. An estimated 23 percent of Mississippians are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and the Mississippi State Department of Health has reported a total of 334 new cases with the numbers currently trending up. Mississippi, a southern state with pockets of entrenched poverty, has struggled to vaccinate residents in remote areas who may not have access to the internet or transportation. While the spread of the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus throughout the U.S. has begun to slow, regions with large populations unvaccinated against COVID-19 continue to be hit the hardest.

Data from USAFacts shows that there are still two states where less than 50% of the total population has received a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while in some states over 80% of the population has been partially vaccinated as of Nov. 9. The data also shows that 40 states and the District of Columbia have a fully vaccinated population of 50% or more.

These are the 10 states with the lowest partial vaccination rates in the country, according to the most recent data:

1. West Virginia (49.21%)
2. Idaho (49.65%)
3. Wyoming (51.63%)
4. Mississippi (52.59%)
5. (tie) Louisiana (54.24%)
5. (tie) Indiana (54.24%)
7. Alabama (55.00%)
8. Tennessee (55.02%)
9. North Dakota (55.67%)
10. Ohio (56.29%)

Seven-day average cases nationwide have been dropping since September after a sharp increase in cases and deaths over the summer as the delta variant spread. States that have vaccination rates lower than the national average often have higher COVID-19 case rates.

County-level data shows that vaccination rates within states can vary significantly. Daily updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide a look into full and partial vaccination rates at the county level.

Around 67% of people in the U.S. have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, and 58% of the population is fully vaccinated.
