Stanford Stroke Center Neurocritical Care Fellowship

The Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine offers a comprehensive, UCNS accredited, 2-year fellowship in Neurocritical Care. The Neurocritical Care Fellowship Director is Anna Finley Caulfield, MD, and the Fellowship Coordinator is Ms. Haihong Nguyen.

Fellows are trained in the assessment and management of critically ill patients including those with primary neurological disorders such as cerebrovascular disease (aneurysmal SAH, intracerebral hemorrhage, and ischemic stroke), status epilepticus, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, and neuromuscular disease, as well as those with secondary neurological complications from pregnancy, systemic illnesses, and organ transplant. Fellows are also involved in the management of pre- and post-op care of neurosurgical and endovascular patients. Fellows work closely with Neurocritical Care, Vascular Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuro-Interventional Radiology, and Critical Care Medicine (Anesthesia and Pulmonary Critical Care) faculty, fellows, and rotating residents throughout their two years of training.

The fellowship consists of a combined 15 months of Critical Care Medicine and Neurocritical Care training, 3 months of Vascular Neurology ward/consult and clinic, and 6 months elective/research time. The fellowship can be geared towards the individual interests of the fellow.  Fellows actively participate in clinical trials.  Research mentorship is available to those who want to explore clinical or basic science research. Fellows are eligible to sit for UCNS Neurocritical Care Certification exam upon completion of their fellowship.

Applicants to the Stanford Neurocritical Care Fellowship must be graduates of an ACGME accredited Neurology residency program and eligible for medical licensure in the state of California.  Stanford University is committed to increasing representation of women and members of minority groups and particularly encourages applications from such candidates.
