Fellowship Training
HOW TO APPLY
To apply for a fellowship position, you must submit the following by email or fax to the fellowship office:
1.The Fellowship Application.
2. A copy of your Curriculum Vitae.
3.Three letters of recommendation addressed to Dr. Louise Furukawa.
4. A copy of your medical school transcript including the Dean's letter.
5. A photocopy of your medical school diploma.
6. Copies of USMLE and ITE examination scores.
7. A copy of your PGY-1 certification letter or certificate of completion.
8. If you have completed residency: a summative competency based evaluation of your residency program performance (sent by your anesthesia program director).
The Stanford University Department of Anesthesia offers 12 month ACGME approved fellowship training program in pediatric anesthesia.
This fellowship year offers clinical experiences in general pediatric and subspecialty pediatric anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, pain management, critical care, and a variety of educational electives including pharmacology-related clinical research, medical education and clinical teaching, and patient simulation.
Qualified applicants may extend the fellowship to a second research year in order to prepare for a career in academic medicine. Opportunities for this extended training include clinical and basic science research for approved projects or clinical pediatric pain.
We are no longer accepting Pediatric Anesthesia or Pain Management Fellowship applications for the 2012–2013 years, but welcome your application for 2013–2014. Fellowship positions remain available for 2012–2013 in Pediatric CV Anesthesia.We also offer a 6-month special fellowship training in pediatric cardiac anesthesia, and in pediatric pain management for candidates who have completed their training in anesthesiology plus 1 year of ACGME approved fellowship training in pediatric anesthesia. For information regarding subspecialty training in pediatric cardiac anesthesia or pain management, please contact the appropriate service chief.
The Fellowship Experience
The fellows on our service rotate through several pediatric assignments during the course of the year, including pediatric cardiac anesthesia, interventional cardiology, pain management, the pediatric and neontatal intensive care, and, of course, general pediatric anesthesia in which experience is gained in the management of infants and children with congenital anomalies, major orthopedic surgery, organ transplantation, neurosurgery, ENT surgery, as well as all routine pediatric cases.
DIDACTIC EDUCATION
Thursday Afternoon Didactic Meetings: 1 hour lectures covering major topics in pediatric anesthesia.
Monday Morning Grand Rounds: 1 hour lectures from faculty pediatric anesthesiologists, alumni , other leading specialist throughout the hospital, visiting professors, and scholars from leading institutions around the world.
Morbidity and Mortality Meetings: monthly discussions of high-risk patients and procedures.
Pediatric Journal Club: monthly discussions led by fellows and/or faculty of important journal articles.
Debates in Anesthesia: bi-monthly presentations and debates by fellows of controversies in pediatric anesthesia.

Fellows have 1-2 months of elective time, depending upon their background, and they have 1 non-clinical day per week during most of their rotations in which to pursue academic interests.
Elective time may be used either for research activity in collaboration with faculty, or for rotations outside the division, such as in advanced pain management, neonatal intensive care, pediatric otolaryngology for anesthesiologists, pediatric cardiology, pulmonary medicine, economics and management in medicine, TEE and echocardiography, PK-PD/data analysis, medical simulation, medical acupuncture, and the cardiovascular intensive care unit.

To learn and refine advanced patient care skills in the management of complex pediatric and neonatal anesthetic procedures. Fellows have the opportunity to manage both acute and chronic pediatric pain patients, in one of the nation's most advanced pediatric tertiary care hospitals.
To grow as a professional through interaction with others in the Department of Anesthesia and other pediatric specialties. Our curriculum affords the opportunity to participate and receive credit for overseas medical volunteer services, such HVO, ASA, OTP, Rotoplast, Interplast, Operation Rainbow, and others. Our faculty have strong commitments to contributing to anesthesia services and education in developing countries.
To receive mentoring and guidance from some of anesthesia's most recognized experts in pain management, cardiac anesthesia and human patient simulation education.
To advance anesthetic practice and science. Stanford offers an active research community with opportunities for research in pediatric pain, cardiac anesthesia, and education along with many other projects, including clinical trials, simulation, and basic science research.
Qualifications and Prerequisites for Fellowship Training
Positions are open to candidates who will have successfully completed residency training in anesthesiology at an accredited training program and who will be board eligible or certified in anesthesiology. Candidates for training in cardiac anesthesia and pediatric pain management must have completed fellowship training in pediatric anesthesia at an accredited training program.
All fellows must have an active license to practice medicine in the State of California. Miscellaneous Information
Moving Expenses: Each pediatric anesthesia fellow whose new Stanford fellowship location is at least 50 miles away from their former home will receive up to $3,000 in moving expenses.
California Medical License Fee: Fellows will be reimbursed $805 toward the cost of initial California medical licensure if obtained after receipt of a Department of Anesthesia contract at Stanford University Medical Center. To apply for a California medical license visit http://www.medbd.ca.gov/. In order to receive your reimbursement an original receipt is required by the California Medical Board.
Privileges: Postdoctoral fellows are registered as "non-matriculated graduate students" and are granted additional privileges. Since all postdoctoral fellows are registered as students, they may be eligible to take Stanford courses for credit during the time their registration is in effect. Auditing Stanford University classes is allowed with permission of the professor.
