The Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine

Clinical Program

Founded in the early 1970s by Drs. William Dement and Christian Guilleminault, the Stanford University Sleep Disorders Clinic was the first medical clinic ever established to specialize in sleep disorders. The clinic diagnoses and treats patients who have difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep at night, problems with excessive daytime sleepiness or other medical problems occurring during sleep. There are also specialized clinics for Narcolepsy, Behavioral Sleep Medicine, and Sleep Surgery.

In 2009, the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic moved to a state-of-the-art facility in the new Stanford Medicine Outpatient Center in Redwood City (see Maps and Directions). The sleep clinic has 14 clinical beds, four additional beds dedicated to research and treats more than 5,000 adults and children each year, including patients from all over the world. The clinic also has a fully accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and has an ACGME- accredited Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program.
