WE WELCOME MARY T. HAWN, MD, MPH TO THE DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY
The Department of Surgery is delighted to welcome Mary T. Hawn, MD, MPH, as our new chair effective July 1, 2015. Dr. Hawn is the former director of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Vice Chair for Quality and Clinical Effectiveness at the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB).
Mary is an accomplished surgeon and health sciences researcher with training in basic science research – making her uniquely poised to lead our world-class surgical department at Stanford Medicine.
At UAB – one of the five largest academic medical centers in the country – Mary recruited top-notch faculty, expanded services and in partnership with GI Medicine established a multidisciplinary digestive health center. Under her leadership, Mary’s division experienced annual growth in clinical volume while achieving high-quality care as measured by the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.
She is also passionately committed to training the next generation of surgeons, and imagining and pursuing the future of surgery. Mary’s experience and values deeply echo Stanford Medicine’s tripartite commitment to research, education and clinical care. She will provide the vision and leadership that we need as we strive to lead the biomedical revolution.
We are excited to have her on board!
