Ability to play the 2nd & 3rd movement of the Mozart Concerto in B flat, K. 191, or equivalent; all major scales; one Milde scale study.

At least 3 yrs. private lessons: ability to play pieces at the level of Bach Suite No. 1, Vivaldi, Marcello sonatas; Squire Tarantella or Bourrée; Elegy by Gabriel Fauré.

Ability to play at the level of: C. Rose, 40 Studies; C.M. Weber, Concertino; W.A. Mozart, Concerto (1st movement); major scales and chromatic scales (full range).

Ability to play scales and arpeggios in major keys to 4 sharps and 4 flats; Etude from Anderson, op. 33, or similar level; movement from a sonata by Handel, Telemann, or J.S. Bach; or a piece from the standard repertoire at a similar level.

It is understood that students coming to the study of fortepiano at the undergraduate level will often not have had previous experience with early keyboard instruments.  Keyboard skills on modern piano at the level of any Beethoven sonata (except op. 49) are sufficient for fortepiano study.

For Audition:  Prepare 10 minutes of music for modern piano, memorized (preferably 2 contrasting pieces); there may also be some sight reading.

Tarrega, Sor, Carcassi; brief works by Bach, Scarlatti-Brouwer, or Villa-Lobos

No proficiency requirements. Sign up on class lists via Axess and attend the first day of class to receive a permission number for enrollment.

Ability to play at the level of Pierné, Impromptu Caprice;  Hindemith, Handel, Blacksmith,  or Salzedo sonatas;  Grandjany, Children’s Corner, etc.

Ability to play at the level of: Bach Partitas; François Couperin 8ème Ordre; Scarlatti Sonatas; Jean-Phillipe Rameau Suites

Previous private study to the advanced high-school level.  Previous exposure to standard German (i.e., Kopprasch or Kling) or French (i.e., Maxime Alphonse, Bk. 2) exercises.

Ability to play all scales, Ferling or similar etude, one of the Six Metamorphoses after Ovid (Britten).

Ability to play J.S. Bach’s Prelude & Fugue in C, BWV 545,  or equivalent.

Ability to play on all 3 of the following:  snare drum: Goldenberg, 3 Etudes, Etude in 12/8 (p. 51); mallets: Goldenberg, No. 1 of the 39 Etudes (p. 62); tympani: Goodman, 4 Drum Studies, Ex. 71, or equivalent.

 Ability to play any 2 of the following:  snare drum: Morris Goldenberg, Guidebook for the Artist Percussionist, Etude II (p. 11); mallets: Goldenberg, Modern School for Xyl., Marimba, Vibraph., Etude II (p.27); tympani: Saul Goodman, Modern Method for Tympani, §2 (examples for 2 drums), Ex. 34, or equivalent.

Ability to play by memory pieces at the level of any Beethoven sonata (except op. 49).

Knowledge and performance of chromatic scale (full range) and test exercises in Rubank Intermediate (beginning sections); for jazz studies, first 6 exercises in Niehaus, Basic Jazz Conception.

Ability to play studies comparable to the Langey, Tutor; Fink, Studies in Legato (or Concone, Solfeggi); Cornette, Method for Trombone; Cimera, selected etudes and studies.

Previous experience: Private lessons during high school, some solo performance experience, knowledge of major and minor scales, some proficiency in a standard trumpet method such as the Arban Complete Conservatory Method. -  Know and play all major and minor scales
-  Know and play all types of seventh chords
- Calculate intervals and chord extensions quickly, including alterations
