Coterm Tuition

Coterms are in one of two tuition groups, which determine not only the tuition rate, but also how many courses you can take.

Tuition Groups

You are ordinarily in the undergraduate tuition group until you complete 12 undergraduate quarters, or once you have your bachelor's degree(s) conferred. Whlie in the undergraduate tuition group, you can enroll in a maximum of 20 units across both undergraduate and graduate careers per quarter.

Coterms are automatically moved to the graduate tuition group in the 13th quarter or upon conferral of the bachelor's degree(s). You are then assessed either full-time graduate tuition for enrolling in 11 to 18 units (plus a pro-rata for each unit above 18) or reduced tuition for enrolling in 8 to 10 units. Note that graduate Engineering tuition rates differ from regular graduate tuition rates. Coterms in the graduate tuition group can enroll in a maximum of 24 units across both undergraduate and graduate careers per quarter.

Coterms may request to be moved into the graduate tuition group before their 13th quarter if they have completed 180 units or will become a graduate Research or Teaching Assistant. Eligible coterms request this move by submitting a HelpSU ticket to the Student Services Center. Once moved into the graduate tuition group, it is not possible to move back to the undergraduate tuition group.

Assistantships

Assistantships may provide a tuition allowance, stipend, and Cardinal Care subsidy. They may also be outside the student's graduate department or interdisciplinary program. Coterms interested in becoming an RA or TA should inquire directly with the hiring department or program.

More information on coterminal tuition groups can be found on the Registrar's Office website.
