VPUE Departmental Grants for Undergraduate Research

VPUE Departmental Grants to Develop Undergraduate Research and Scholarship are intended to introduce Stanford undergraduates to ways of conducting scholarship in a particular field, and to promote student training in rigorous methods of inquiry, analysis, or creation appropriate to the academic discipline of interest. Grants will fund programs that support student training and learning through participation in faculty-designed research, scholarly, and creative projects, and that promote the inclusion of students in intellectual communities with a primary emphasis on developing the skills that prepare faculty-mentored students to undertake more independent projects in the future.

In summary, students supported by this funding will develop their capacities as researchers, humanists, or artists through intellectual exploration, engagement with faculty, and immersion in a scholarly community. Departmental Grants are for groups of faculty within a coordinating department, interdisciplinary program, or center, whereas Faculty Grants support individual faculty.

For more information, consult the Request for Proposals and contact Associate Dean Brian Thomas.

The 2015-2016 Academic Year deadline is October 31st, 2015.

Pre-Field Preparation Course Grants

Undergraduates conducting scholarly projects off campus are faced with numerous challenges related to the methods, ethics, safety, and logistics of research. Funded courses will help students prepare for and navigate these challenges, increasing the number of students who are able to return to campus with 1) rigorous project results and 2) refined perspectives on the conduct and culture of observation, analysis, and/or creativity in their chosen discipline.

The 2015-2016 Academic Year deadline is February 15, 2016

Writing Student Grant Letters of Recommendation

Students submitting their own proposals for funding through the Student Grant program are required to work with a faculty mentor throughout their project.  Part of the application process includes the review of a faculty letter of recommendation.

The most helpful letters include an honest and critical evaluation of the student's written proposal, including:

  • a scholarly evaluation of the proposed project, its feasibility, and its potential significance to the discipline
  • any suggestions on how the project plans could be modified or improved
  • an assessment of the student’s level of preparation (including methodological training) and independence within your own research or creative agenda
  • a focused critique of the student's readiness for travel off campus or work with human subjects, if applicable
  • an outline of future interactions between you, the student, and other mentor(s) with whom you collaborate

Letter must be uploaded directly via webform, using the information emailed to you when a student submits their proposal.  UAR cannot accept hard copies or email attachments.

UAR maintains the confidentiality of letters to the extent provided by law.  Because the proposal review process is intended to be educational for students, we may aggregate faculty recommendations with comments from other of grant reviewers when giving feedback to students. Candid faculty evaluations remain vital to the quality of this feedback process.

Comments or questions about the Student Grants program are welcome at vpue-research@stanford.edu.

The Cox Medal

Undergraduate Advising and Research invites nominations for the Allan V. Cox Medal for Faculty Excellence Fostering Undergraduate Research.

Since 1988, the Cox Medal has been awarded annually to a faculty member who has established a record of excellence mentoring undergraduate researchers over a number of years. The medal may also go to a faculty member who has done an especially outstanding job with just one or two undergraduates whose work is unusually superior. All University faculty are eligible.  However, due to the number of exceptional nominations received each year, previous recipients are not considered for a second award.

The 2015-2016 nomination deadline is April 18, 2016.
