Who Participates?

Students who have completed three quarters in their freshman year are eligible to participate in Sophomore College; Application to the program is in the spring of freshmen year. SoCo seminars represent diverse areas of study, and attracts  students who share a passion for the course topic.  A shared interest in being a part of an intellectual community brings them together for this three-week program.

Reasons to Participate

The reasons students participate in SoCo are as diverse as the seminar topics.

Some students seek out a seminar because it is in a field they are considering pursuing:
“After not exploring my major interest as a freshman, connecting with a group of people who share my passion was fantastic. Not only was I reminded of why I'm pursuing what I'm pursuing, but now I know people who will be in many of my classes for the next three years.”

For others, Sophomore College provided a way for them to explore an interest outside their academic path:
“My SoCo experience introduced me to a different intellectual community than my own. I am not a premed and almost everyone in my class was, but I loved being exposed to this way of thinking and solving problems.”

Whatever a student's interest is,  there is a Sophomore College seminar that will enrich their Stanford experience.
