Executive Program for Education Leaders

Schools must provide students with experiences both in and beyond the classroom that build the skills they need for future success. At the same time, however, education leaders are facing limited resources, workforce challenges, and conflicting constituent demands.

As a result, creating the quality of schools required by our rapidly changing and challenging world means that leaders must be dynamic and entrepreneurial change agents.

To prepare these educators, Stanford GSB and Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE) jointly offer Stanford’s Executive Program for Education Leaders (EPEL). The program supports the development of innovative, problem-solving management skills and leadership capacity for current superintendents and other central office leaders.

Eligibility

Superintendents across all levels of experience and from all types of districts and charter management organizations in California are invited to apply to the 2016-2017 program.

Curriculum and Outcomes

EPEL’s curriculum addresses the expressed needs of districts in the context of current education policy, building on the cutting-edge research of Stanford faculty. Program takeaways span salient leadership, management, and education issues.

EPEL participants build individual, team, and cohort leadership capacity. Participants also develop a strong network of relationships with a diverse group of peers, strengthen their district team and support system, and expand their opportunities for extended cohort learning.

Program Structure

The yearlong program includes a mix of case-study and research-based presentations, discussions, and exercises led by Stanford faculty and guest speakers.

The program kicks off with a five-day residential deep dive tackling leadership challenges, approaches to management, and current policy Chances to network and learn from other superintendents and central office leaders deepen the learning experience.

Two additional weekends on campus reunite the cohort and faculty for further sessions and collaborative work.

Program Fee

Stanford GSE and Stanford GSB are generously subsidizing the cost of this program. As a result, the typical cost of $19,000 per participant is significantly reduced to:

Program Fee for EPEL
2016-17 $7,000 per district

This fee covers tuition and course materials during the year, as well as accommodations and meals during the on-campus portions for one superintendent (summer & follow-up weekends) and 2-4 district team members (up to two each during follow-up weekends).

2016-2017 Application

Currently accepting applications for the 2016-2017 cohort. 

Priority deadline: March 1st.

My experience in Stanford EPEL provides a wonderful opportunity to deepen my own knowledge base and renew my focus on building a strong school organization. Our time with the professors allowed me to interact with challenging organizational dynamics that are experienced in the private sector and think about how private sector solutions transfer into educational settings. Our team had a great experience and are using the content of the week to redefine our District messaging and refine our improvement plans and focus.
