A ten-day residential program designed to further the professional development of leaders in the nonprofit sector.

Led by a strong sense of mission and vision, nonprofit organizations play a critical role in improving society and impacting the world around us. The Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders (EPNL) brings together leaders from social and human services, health care, community development, arts, environment and education organizations to further their professional development and build an enduring network.

Drawing on leading-edge research and the teachings of Stanford faculty, this program integrates conceptual knowledge with individual experiences to support participants in their impact on the nonprofit sector.

Who Should Attend?

EPNL targets decision makers in nonprofit organizations. Ideal candidates are typically at the CEO or Executive Director level or sometimes at the COO or VP level with the rationale that these are the individuals who can immediately have the largest impact on their organization. While educational and professional backgrounds may vary, participants are often mid-career with a long track record of working in nonprofits or their sector of targeted impact. Participants are typically employed full-time by a nonprofit organization.

Participants represent a range of organizations in various sectors, sizes and geographies. The typical organization represented, however, has a broad impact and is well established. All participant organizations hold nonprofit status or their country’s equivalent.

What to Expect

  • In-class lectures, discussions and exercises led by Stanford MBA faculty
  • A richer understanding of how to integrate organizational mission and strategy
  • An increased confidence in your ability to lead and scale your organization
  • A new perspective on your organization’s potential and impact
  • Development of a plan of action for addressing key organizational and strategic challenges
  • A strong network of relationships with a diverse group of nonprofit leaders

Tuition

Tuition is calculated on a sliding scale based on the operating budget of the organization the participant represents. Tuition includes all accommodations, meals, and course materials during the program. Accepted applicants will be eligible to apply for a limited number of merit-based scholarships, which cover the full or partial cost of tuition.

Organization’s Operating Budget Individual Tuition
<$1M $4,300
$1M-$20M $7,500
>$20M $10,900

The Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders is subsidized in part by the Graduate School of Business through its Center for Social Innovation and from additional funding to further support Stanford’s commitment to nonprofits. This allows for the program to be offered at a lower, subsidized tuition rate than the typical cost of $17,000.

Stanford GSB professors communicated complex topics using a format that was useful and engaging. It is rare to have a week with other nonprofit executives and I found sharing and listening to their insights an absolute highlight of the course.

EPNL is so much more than classroom text put in the nonprofit sphere. We were introduced to proven models of leadership and challenged to think about how we could be doing more in our roles and organizations, having more impact and making the world a better place.
