Population
Growth
The population of the City of San José is estimated by the California Department of Finance (DOF) to have grown by 16,962 persons or 1.7% in calendar year 2013, from 983,574 persons on January 1, 2013 to 1,000,536 persons on January 1, 2014. This increase maintains San José's position as the third largest City in California (behind Los Angeles and San Diego, respectively) and the nation's 10th largest city.

Housing
In recent years, San José's population growth has been influenced by the annexation of several large unincorporated county pockets. Typically, however, the primary driver of population growth in San José has been the construction of new housing. For example, building permits were issued for approximately 2,750 dwelling units per year over the 2000-2010 time period. The City's total housing stock is estimated at 319,625 units on January 1, 2013.
