The Public Works Department oversees city resources that manage the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of city infrastructure and facilities. This includes City buildings and regional facilities, like branch libraries, community centers, and City Hall.

Additionally, the department maintains the fleet vehicles used by employees throughout the city in service to the community.

Department Services
Some of the core services the Public Works Department provides include:
  • Animal Care Services - provides animal shelter services, field services, and administrative-licensing services for San José residents and residents of Cupertino, Los Gatos, Milpitas, and Saratoga
  • Capital Project Services - includes the planning, design, and construction of City improvements, parks, public buildings, roads and bridges, sanitary and storm sewers, trails, and technical and engineering services that support the city's 5-year capital improvement program
  • Development Services - facilitates private development in the City of San José, ensuring that projects comply with applicable regulations and provide the necessary public infrastructure to support development, including streets, sidewalks, sewers, streetlights, street island and frontage landscaping, and traffic signals
  • Labor Compliance - implements the City of San José living wage and prevailing wage policies
  • Event Services - manages special events that occur at San José City Hall, including weddings, performances, lectures, and similar activities that enhance the education and cultural enrichment of our citizens.
