The Program in Human Biology at 40 Years: What Made this Start-up so Successful? »

Early faculty from the Program in Human Biology will discuss the idea behind the founding of Stanford's largest interdisciplinary, inter-school program, the process that led up to the founding and their view of the reasons why HumBio has been so successful over the past 40 plus years.  Come join Professors Sandy Dornbusch, Paul Ehrlich, Shirley Feldman, Herant Katchadourian and Don Kennedy in a panel discussion moderated by Professor Carl Boggs.

Nuclear Power: Promise or Peril? The Technology and Policy Behind Safe Nuclear Power.  

Panelists include Mike Dunn, Director of Laser Inertial Fusion Energy at Lawrence Livermore Labs; Thomas Isaacs, Director for the Office of Planning and Special Studies at Lawrence Livermore Labs and an FSI affiliate; and Alex Komoroske, Managing Director at Ritchie Capital Management and previous Licensing and Safety Engineer for Fukushima at GE.

The panel discussion will examine the outlook for nuclear both nationally and internationally, focusing on the effect that safety concerns will have on policy, commercial feasibility, and the direction of research.  You will have a chance to engage with experts on the topic in a networking session following the panel discussion.

Jon Wellinghoff was named Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission by President Barack Obama on March 19, 2009.

Chairman Wellinghoff will talk about steps FERC has taken to ensure that customers have reliable, efficient and sustainable energy. He will focus on two rules - Order 745, which was intended to create open and fair compensation for demand response, and Order 755, designed to ensure fair compensation for resources based on the actual services provided. Students interested in energy or federal regulation will not want to miss this learning opportunity.
