Resources for the Future and Woods cosponsored seminar featuring Jeremy Goldbogen, assistant professor of biology at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station. Goldbogen leads the expert panel focused on understanding the science behind increased shipping and the related impacts on marine life, ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. The panel will also discuss ongoing efforts by the Obama administration to plan for increased shipping in the Arctic, including the Port Access Route Study and proposed two-way routing plan, nautical charting updates by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Coast Guard, and expansion of the port at Nome. A light lunch will be provided starting at 12:30 p.m. and registration is required.

Modern Well Testing Analysis Shortcourse featuring Instructor: Roland Horne, Thomas Davies Barrow Professor of Earth Sciences and Senior Fellow by Courtesy, Woods Institute.

This course will cover both the philosophy and the practice of well test analysis and design, in the context of modern, computer-aided approaches. The course will use a series of real well test examples. These examples include a wide variety of different kinds of tests from operating fields worldwide. Participants will have the opportunity for hands-on practice using computers during the course, and may also bring along data of their own for discussion or investigation.

Fundamentals of Reservoir Simulation featuring Instructors: Khalid Aziz, Otto N. Miller Professor in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, Emeritus and Affiliate, Woods Institute;  Lou Durlofsky, Otto N. Miller Professor in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and Affiliate, Woods Institute; and Hamdi Tchelepi, Professor of Energy Resources Engineering.


This course will cover both fundamentals and selected advanced topics in reservoir simulation. It is intended for simulation developers and users who wish to strengthen their understanding of the fundamentals of this technology. The emphasis of the course is on the mathematical description and physical understanding of the underlying equations. Though the emphasis of the course is not on the actual use of a simulator, the practical implications of many of the concepts will be discussed. The course is not credited to a Stanford University degree.

Anne Castle, Landreth Visiting Fellow and former Assistant Secretary for Water and Science, U.S. Department of Interior, is featured at this Brown Bag session titled: Don’t Fence Me In – Legal Barriers to Agricultural Water Transactions. Water scarcity and escalating pressures on agricultural water supplies increase the need for flexibility in our historically rigid water law framework. This talk will review some of the legal barriers to market-based agricultural water transactions, some of the mechanisms currently in use to overcome those barriers, and provide additional recommendations.
