The Climate Debate Demystified: The Psychology, Media and Communication Behind Climate Change »

In order to understand how to change public opinion regarding climate change and influence the politics and policies surrounding this issue, we must first understand the way people think about climate change and the way that climate change is communicated to the public through the media. This interdisciplinary panel will bring together leading Stanford faculty, including Woods Senior Fellow Noah Diffenbaugh (Environmental Earth System Science), students and Bay Area experts in policy, science, economics and media to explore this issue from many diverse perspectives. It will cover the psychology involved in thinking about climate change and other environmental issues, media portrayal of climate change, communication of climate change to the public, and the interaction of all of these areas to shape public opinion.

Barton ("Buzz") Thompson, Jr., co-director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, will participate in a discussion on the tug-of-war over groundwater exacerbated by California's historic drought. Other panelists will be Debbie Davis, community and rural affairs adviser in California's Office of Planning and Research; and Felicia Marcus, chair of the State Water Resources Control Board.
