Student Spotlight
Kyra Jasper
International Relations & Human Rights, ‘20
Center for Civil Liberties, Kyiv, Ukraine
"My internship provided me with valuable context for how civil society is shaping the development of Ukraine, especially as it also faces ongoing conflicts in Crimea and Donbas. I learned about different advocacy tools that are the most effective in the Ukrainian context. I also became much more independent by learning how to let things go, adapt as necessary, and overcome obstacles that I realized I was placing for myself."
Michelle Li
MA Public Policy, ’19
VoxUkraine, Kyiv, Ukraine
"One of the most significant things I learned from this experience was how to work on a project without defined boundaries. I was tasked to develop groundwork for a database in addition to writing data policy. As an economics major, no classes I had taken prepared me for this task, but I learned to ask questions and be creative. I learned how important it was to ask questions and for help if and when I needed it, and how it was important to have a can-do attitude. I truly felt like I was a part of the organization, not just as “the intern,” but as a contributing member."
CREEES in Ukraine
Last summer, CREEES Student Services Officer Nelia Lanets organized a three-day excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Lviv for Kyra Jasper and Michelle Li, CREEES’s inaugural Ukraine interns. Rodriguez, a native of Ukraine, accompanied the students and helped them to navigate the city, serving as a translator to ensure they got the most out of their culturally immersive experience.
In Lviv, they visited the historically famous Rynok Square, where they tasted traditional Ukrainian cuisine while enjoying the rooftop view of the city from a local restaurant. They browsed local gift shops, tasted famous Lviv coffee at the “Svit Kavy” coffee shop, took pictures at Dim Legend rooftop restaurant, listened to local street singers, and engaged in conversations with locals.
