Department/Program Description: The mission of the Stanford Chemistry Department is to deliver excellence in education and research by attracting the very best faculty and students. The Department serves 25 faculty members, 5 lecturers, ~90 postdocs, ~250 PhD students, 10 research staff, and 30 administrative staff, with an annual consolidated budget of approximately $30 million. The Department facilities consist of over 300,000 square feet of research, classroom and administrative space spread over 6 buildings. This position reports into the Finance and Research Administration Manager for the Department.
Position Summary: The Department of Chemistry is seeking a Financial Analyst 1. The Financial Analyst 1 will work under general supervision of the Finance Manager and must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and customer-focused mindset. It is critical that this position exhibit the abilities to practice sound judgment and decision-making, effective written & oral communication, strong attention to detail and respectful relationship management. This position must also exhibit a strong desire to continuously learn new and unfamiliar business topics, policies and procedures as they relate to finance – the ability to translate this information into operational successes will be critical.

In this role, you will:
- Perform structured analysis; conduct data mining; identify, clarify, and investigate discrepancies and exceptions; proactively develop solutions and processes.
- Maintain, reconcile, review, combine, and validate financial data sets and accounts, utilizing financial reports, financial databases, and key financial information.
- Contribute to development of budget, forecasting, and analyses to be used for key activities or decision making.
- Run and analyze financial reports, often from multiple systems; assist in preparation of management information reports.
- Resolve issues within immediate work unit; Perform preliminary analysis, recognize exceptions and recommend solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes.
- Ensure works complies with complex internal policies and external regulations which may require interpretation.
- Participate as a member of a project team and contribute to change management strategy through communication and collaboration with others.
- Serve as a first line resource to client groups on matters in work unit.
- Understand and participate in cross training on core functions in work area or unit; serve as a back-up to other functions.
- May supervise the day-to-day activities and provide on the job coaching and training to other staff, as needed.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
- User knowledge and demonstrated experience of financial systems; internet and computer literacy.
- Understanding and ability to apply basic accounting skills and concepts.
- Demonstrated communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal audiences and client groups.
- Basic project management skills and ability to contribute as part of a project team.

Lecturer Position in Chemistry

The Stanford Chemistry Department invites applications for a Ph.D.-level Lecturer position to begin autumn 2021 to join a team of Lecturers in the Department. The candidate should have a strong background in biochemistry, organic or general chemistry. This position is a full-time, 9-month, fixed-term, full-benefit appointment. The initial appointment is for 2 years, with reappointment terms of 3 years. Summer instruction positions are also available to provide for a 12-month salary. The teaching duties vary quarterly between instructing independent laboratories to co-instructing in an integrated lecture/laboratory course with a faculty member. The department is moving aggressively toward active learning, thus the ideal candidate will also be involved in developing and evaluating new active learning materials. In addition to instruction, the candidate will be responsible for evolving laboratory exercises, mentoring course teaching assistants, advising students, and participating in Department committees, as appropriate.
