Poonam Hosamani Receives CA-HI SGIM Clinician Educator Award

The California-Hawaii Region of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) has selected Poonam Hosamani, MD, (clinical assistant professor, general medical disciplines), for its 2017 CA-HI SGIM Clinician Educator Award and recognized her for the award at its regional meeting in January.

The Clinician Educator award is intended primarily for individuals in the early phase of their careers or for mid-career professionals with a new or recent focus on medical education. SGIM Regional President Elizabeth Goldman says the Clinician Educator Award honors those who have “contributed to the mission of SGIM, whose work has advanced academic general internal medicine and who have been active supporters and participants in SGIM activities.” She calls Poonam “a role model” for the next generation of SGIM members.

Poonam earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Northwestern, where she also attended medical school. She completed her residency at New York Hospital / Cornell Medical Center in 2012 and is board-certified in internal medicine. Since being at Stanford, she has earned several honors including the Arthur L. Bloomfield Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, the Divisional Teaching Award and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching.

Three Faculty Members Elected to American Society for Clinical Investigation

Ash Alizadeh, MD, PhD; Aida Habtezion, MD; and Ravi Majeti, MD, PhD, are among the 64 new members elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).

The ASCI is an honor society comprised of more than 3,000 physician-scientists from all medical fields. Members must be elected before their 50^th birthday and are recognized for their significant research accomplishments.

Residents and Faculty Well Represented at the SGIM Regional Meeting in Los Angeles

The 2017 annual meeting of the Society of General Internal Medicine CA-Hi chapter took place in Los Angeles on January 21. Residents and faculty were well represented – presenting posters and research, serving in leadership roles, and running workshops.

Residents Rachita Navara and Jessica Langston received accolades for their poster presentations. Navara was awarded first place in the research poster category, while Langston took home third place in clinical vignettes.

Maja Artandi co-chaired the one-day event, and was elected as the new President for the SGIM CA-HI region. She will oversee next year’s annual meeting in Palo Alto.

Faculty also led several workshops. Linda Barman and Kirsti Weng presided over a session entitled “Everyday Wellness Skills in 10 Minutes,” and Baldeep Singh ran the popular “Mentorship Workshop.”
