The Arabic television network al-Jazeera has aired an audiotape purportedly of Osama bin Laden threatening to kill U.S. soldiers if the United States executes the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
The man on the tape says Americans taken prisoner by al-Qaida will be executed if Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is put to death. He is currently being held by the United States, where he is to be tried.
Al Jazeera aired the audiotape on Thursday.
There was no immediate independent verification of the recording's authenticity.
