Slideshow: Potsdamer Platz, Germany (Photos by VOA news writer Gabe Joselow)

Potsdamer Platz is an area of Berlin that has undergone an enormous amount of commercial development since the wall went down in 1989. And while it is often celebrated for having risen from the ashes, it is unclear exactly what to make of the area’s new character.

While the east and west sides of Potsdamer Platz used to stand in complete political, ideological and economic opposition, they are now better distinguished by a giant advertisement for Samsung in the east, and the gleaming Sony Center shopping complex in the west.

These pictures, along with some interviews of the characters of Potsdamer Platz, seek to explain or at least document something of the area’s strange, evolving identity.
