A guide to resources for PWR 1SW: Scandals, Private Lives, and Public Faces: The Rhetoric of Stanford. In this course we will look at the early history and rhetoric of the "public face" of Stanford University, from post Gold Rush and Big Four railroad era to the building of the University, from Leland Stanford's public speeches about the Chinese (pro and con), to the University representation of the controversy surrounding Jane Stanford's death and possible poisoning. We will also look at some of the lesser known Stanford stories, such as David Starr Jordan's participation in the eugenics movement, and at Edward Muybridge's photos of Stanford race horses, which led to the beginning of the motion picture.
