Curricula for Academic Careers in the Biosciences
The School of Medicine Career Center is proud to offer the following courses and programs to assist Bioscience PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and research/clinical trainees in preparing and pursuing their careers of choice within the broad academic sector.
Open to all Bioscience PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and research/clinical trainees. Additional program details, including detailed registration instructions and information about guest speakers, is at http://med.stanford.edu/careercenter/resources/curricula_academia.html .
PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in other disciplines will find relevant programs for academic careers at the Office of the Vice Provost Graduate Education, the Career Development Center, and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
These programs replace INDE 231: Future Faculty Seminar, which is no longer offered. Past syllabi, speaker lists and videos of the Future Faculty Seminar are available here.

Career Prep & Practice for Bioscientists: Academia
Winter Quarter (January 8 - March 5, 2015)
3:15 – 4:45pm Thursdays; optional 30-minute informal conversations with panelists afterwardl
LKSC 130 (January 22 will be in Munzer Auditorium)
This quarter-long series of panels, workshops, and discussions will help Bioscience PhD students, MD students, postdoctoral fellows and research/clinical trainees to understand possible work environments, try out new skills and connect with their intended field. Specifically, they will:
- Identify the right next step

Develop skills and knowledge essential for success as junior faculty in research and teaching institutions

Assess their readiness

Build confidence for their academic career of choice
Program Objectives: During this program, participants will

Develop greater awareness of the breadth of roles and expectations across academic institutions.

Understand how committee expectations vary across faculty roles and institutions.

Assess their readiness for pursuing faculty and/or postdoctoral opportunities.

Learn a framework for career decision-making to trainees.

Build connections with experienced faculty and alumni for advice, support and feedback, now and in the future.

Gain a greater understanding of the skills needed to succeed as a new faculty member.

Try out academic skills, and learn how to continue building these skills now.
