SUMCnet is a highly secure virtual network composed of networks from:

  • Stanford University School of Medicine (SoM)
  • Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH)
  • Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC)

SUMCnet provides SoM faculty and staff the ability to access LPCH/SHC clinical systems from SoM computers. Not everyone needs access to SUMCnet; read on for explanation and instructions on how to connect.

Networks at SUMC

There are now four networks that support Stanford University Medical Center (SUMC):

  • LPCH Clinical Network that is used for LPCH computer assets
  • SHC Clinical Network that is used for SHC computer assets
  • SoM Research Network that is used for SoM computers that don’t require access to clinical applications
  • SUMCnet, a highly secure clinical network for accessing LPCH and SHC clinical applications

Which network to use

LPCH and SHC Clinical Networks are designed for:
  • LPCH/SHC employees in space where the LPCH/SHC network is available
  • SoM Faculty or Staff who have or acquire a LPCH/SHC computer and only need access to standard clinical & office applications
SoM Research Network is designed for:
  • SoM Faculty or Staff with no need for clinical application access.

SUMCnet is designed for SoM Faculty or Staff who:

  • Need to access clinical applications
  • Require unique applications or computer configuration
  • Are located in “foreign” locations (e.g., SoM faculty or staff in either an LPCH or SHC facility)
  • Are using/able to use an LPCH/SHC computer, but are in space where no LPCH/SHC network exists

SUMCnet Service Levels

SoM SUMCnet computers are supported by SoM Department desktop support staff.  IRT provides training, coordination, and telephone triaging.  Support for SUMCnet network infrastructure is provided by LPCH, SHC, and SoM as appropriate.

The Service level is determined by each department through staffing of local desktop support staff.

SoM SUMCnet computers are not intended to replace general-purpose clinical access computers, such as general-use computers in clinic spaces.

SoM SUMCnet computers should not be relied on for the sole delivery of patient care.

How to Access SUMCnet

You must agree to keep your system secure through regular maintenance and monitoring.  Contact your local desktop support personnel and request that your computer be put on SUMCnet.  They will ensure that your machine must be secured.  There are some minimum requirements; your machine:

  • Must be running a supported Operating System (Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 Pro, Mac OS 10.5/10.6)
  • Must be securely configured by a SUMCnet certified desktop support staff
  • Must be running/using Anti-virus, Bigfix client, have the local Firewall enabled, and minimize services configured by using the DCM tool

Remote Access to SUMCnet

Since SUMCnet is a secure network, remote access to it from off campus is highly regulated. Below are the requirements for remote access to SUMCnet:

  • The off-campus computer from which you are connecting must have anti-malware software installed. Software for this purpose is available at http://ess.stanford.edu.
  • The off-campus computer must have a current operating system that is fully patched and updated.
  • The user can only access their SUMCnet-connected computer through a Remote Desktop connection using the Stanford Cisco VPN client configured with an SUMCnet connection entry. To set up your Remote Desktop connection, see the Off-Campus Access page.

To obtain the SUMCnet connection entry profile you will need to call IRT at 725-8000 or submit a HelpSU request to be added to the SUMCnet Remote Access list. They will then direct you to the site to download the SUMCnet connection entry profile.
