Podcasts to Broadcasts: The Rhetoric of Radio

PWR1AB - Winter 2016 - Instructor: Angela Becerra Vidergar
Last Updated: 11-Dec-2015

Using examples from NPR to War of the Worlds, we will examine the unique rhetoric of radio writing and audio production. We'll read about radio in modern society from scholars and media experts such as David Foster Wallace and Henry Jenkins. We'll look at radio in literature and film, the importance of equipment and engineering, and examples of radio used to instigate action (i.e. public service, activism, disaster response) and bring research to the public. Possible topics include the place of radio in historical moments, development of audio technology, uses of medical podcasting, and other creative, political, and cultural perspectives on a medium of global significance.
