- This is a parallel submission process: #1 - submit your online application to the NIH and #2 - submit the Stanford Internal NIH Loan Repayment form to Shannon Monahan*
- #1-Complete your online NIH application. When you are completing your online application, the name of the institutional contact for Stanford University, Shannon Monahan, automatically populates when entering Stanford University into the Institutional Contact search field when submitting your online application. Shannon, who works in the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, is the official representative for all of Stanford University, regardless if the applicant is a postdoc, resident, Instructor, or assistant professor.
NOTE: You do not have to submit your NIH LRP applications through the RMG fellowship office or your Research Process Manager (RPM).
- *#2: All applicants must submit their Stanford Internal NIH Loan Repayment (fillable PDF form) to Shannon Monahan per the instructions on the form by the time you submit your online application (or by Nov. 15, 2014).
As Stanford's contact, Shannon automatically receives notification from the NIH of all LRP application submissions. This prompts her to provide the NIH with annual income and base salary for each applicant. Shannon will contact Faculty Affairs to verify annual income for professors and instructors and will contact the individuals whose names are provided in the supplemental forms for those in other positions provide to verify base salary for other applicants.

Purpose:
NIH wants to encourage outstanding health professionals to pursue careers in biomedical, behavioral, social, and clinical research. If you commit at least two years to conducting qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit organization or U.S. federal, state, or local government entity, NIH may repay up to $35,000 of your qualified student loan debt per year, including most undergraduate, graduate, and medical school loans. Loan repayment benefits are in addition to the institutional salary you receive for your research.
You may submit only one LRP application to NIH in any fiscal year, even though your research may be appropriate for more than one of the programs.
- Residents, postdoctoral fellows, medical fellows, basic life science staff/research associates, Instructors and assistant professors who meet the eligibility criteria.
- Citizenship - you must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident of the U.S.
- Doctoral Degree - you must have a health professional doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D., Psy.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.P.M., D.C., N.D., O.D., D.V.M., or equivalent doctoral degree) from an accredited institution, with one exception:
- The Contraception and Infertility Research LRP is open to individuals with a doctoral degree (Ph.D.), as well as nurses, physician assistants, graduate students, and postgraduate research fellows training in the health professions.

- **Special eligibility clarification: Individuals (including postdocs) who are paid by the VA are not eligible to apply for the Extramural Loan Repayment program (even if their appointment is through Stanford).
