Bass Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases

The Bass Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases is a state-of-the-art home for a medical team long recognized for excellence. Our program is part of the Stanford Cancer Institute, which achieved the prestigious Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute in 2007.  With a fully integrated inpatient/outpatient environment and a world-class faculty and staff, the Bass Center provides an ideal environment for delivering the best possible care for children, adolescents, and young adults with blood diseases and cancer. 

The Bass Center was designed to create a hopeful, healing environment by moving most services for cancer and blood diseases to one physical location in the hospital, expediting care delivery and ensuring optimal care coordination. The center includes inpatient facilities, a clinic, an onsite laboratory, a fully equipped day hospital, a procedure unit with general anesthesia capability, and a specialized pharmacy. Each patient is followed by a nurse coordinator and a social worker who together work with the medical team to ensure that all of the child’s and family’s needs are met.  Dedicated specialists in pain management, rehabilitation, psychiatry/psychology, nutrition, palliative care, school program, chaplaincy, child life, and fertility preservation are integrated into the daily care of our patients.

Nearly all inpatient beds are in private rooms, each equipped with a fold-out daybed that can sleep two parents. Other comforts include lounge areas equipped with toys, TV and internet access, a kitchen, and valet parking. For safety, measures such as a HEPA filtration protect fragile immune systems during treatment that kills many of the body’s germ-fighting cells.
