Lieutenant Sean Hart commands the Investigations Division of the Redwood City Police Department. Lieutenant Sean Hart's team includes two detective sergeants and ten detectives.

The detectives are divided into one of the three units within the division: the Property Crimes Team, The Crimes Against Persons Crimes Team, and the Street Crime Suppression Team. The detectives assigned to investigate property crimes may investigate among other crimes such as: thefts, burglaries, fraud, and financial crimes. Detectives who are assigned to investigate crimes against persons may investigate among other crimes: assaults, sexual assaults, robberies, homicides, and child abuse. Those detectives assigned to the Street Crime Suppression Team investigate among other crimes: gang violence, narcotics sales, prostitution, and other criminal activity that affects the quality of life within the city. Detectives also work closely with other law enforcement agencies in the area to coordinate joint cases, and share information regarding crimes, and trends that affect all of San Mateo County, or the State.

The detectives within each unit are primarily tasked with investigating cases that are reported through the Patrol Division. Information developed by detectives is then passed back to the Patrol Division to ensure the enforcement efforts are focused and directed. Once a suspect is arrested as the result on an investigation, the Investigations Division with the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office coordinates the prosecution of the suspect.
